From covering Student Government Board resolutions to spotlighting Oakland neighborhood businesses, student journalists provide a perspective on all things Pitt: Students, faculty and staff alike can tune in to WPTS Radio, watch Pitt to the Point or pick up The Pitt News for a hyperlocal news fix.
The students who make these publications happen are building valuable skills that can apply to any profession, said Jules Nissley, news director of WPTS-Radio.
“[Student journalists] are interacting with people on a daily basis. The whole point of the job is bringing in different perspectives and hearing different voices. I think that’s great for character growth, and it teaches how to be a communicator,” said Nissley, a sophomore in the School of Nursing.
Working on student-run media also gives student journalists a sense of belonging and connection, said Ryan Tarabokia, former anchor and news director for Pitt to the Point.
“Being able to practice [on-air reporting] and learn alongside people builds camaraderie. Everyone wants you to succeed,” said Tarabokia, a senior in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences.

The Pitt News
Founded in 1910, the University’s storied newspaper covers campus-centric news, Pitt sports, cultural events and opinions. The publication’s accolades include a 2022 Crown Award for overall excellence from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and multiple recognitions from the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association and the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania.
“There’s a huge team of students behind every story that you read in The Pitt News. We are more passionate about the words on the page than readers could fathom,” said Grace Longforth, editor-in-chief of the Pitt News and senior in the Dietrich School. “It means so much that they take the time to read and share our work.”
